NDMC

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) building, designed by Kuldeep Singh, is a landmark of India’s postindependence modernism and was Delhi’s tallest building until 2010. I am drawn to its monumental scale, verticality, and sweeping form. Growing up in New Delhi in the late 1980s, it was one of the city’s most visible expressions of modern architecture, accessible to all. My fascination with it has only deepened over time particularly as New Delhi’s landscape becomes increasingly defined by fast-built, overdecorated construction.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) headquarters is located in Palika Kendra, a 21-storey Brutalist building in New Delhi. Completed in 1983, it is one of the tallest structures in Lutyens' Delhi and serves as the administrative hub and command center for civic governance. Designed by renowned architect Kuldip Singh with structural engineer Mahendra Raj, the modernist, exposed-concrete building is an iconic example of post-independence brutalism. It is a proposed modern heritage site by INTACH.
